The donut is made by the Mandarin Cake Shop in the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, Hong Kong.

Afternoon Fuel for Kids

The end of the school day for many children means the beginning of sports practices, music lessons and homework. Be sure your child has the energy to stay focused and make it to dinner with healthy afternoon snacks, such as:

  • Trail mix of nuts, dried fruit, whole-grain pretzels and low-sugar dry cereal
  • Low-fat yogurt
  • Fruit slices
  • A fruit smoothie
  • Vegetables and hummus
  • Pretzels with peanut butter or hummus
  • Low-fat cheese and whole-grain crackers
  • Whole-grain cereal dry or with low-fat or fat-free milk
  • Low-fat milk, 100-percent juices and water.
  • Reduced-sodium turkey breast wrapped around apple slices
  • Nuts and raisins
  • Celery sticks filled with peanut or almond butter and sprinkled with dried cranberries or raisins
  • Baked tortilla chips and salsa
  • Whole-wheat tortilla with reduced-sodium turkey breast and reduced-fat cheese heated in the microwave.

Breakfast Bread Loaf

Ingredients

2¼ cups all-purpose flour
1½ tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
1¾ cups plain yogurt
2 egg whites
1/3 cup raisins
2 tbsp honey

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 425ºF.
  2. Mix flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt together in a large bowl.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the yogurt and egg whites. Fold this into the flour mixture with the raisin and honey.
  4. Grease a 2 lb loaf pan with butter. Spoon in the mixture. Bake in oven for 20 minutes until golden. Cool slightly and turn out of the pan.
  5. Serve warm with a selection of fresh fruit and juice for a healthy breakfast.
